Mostyn Family Grant Criteria       

 

Purpose

The aim of the GESA Mostyn Family Grant is to support innovative research to improve outcomes for patients with colorectal and pancreatic cancer in Australia. This can be from “basic science” to applied “translational” research in either field, and can include epidemiological studies.

 

Value

One grant of $30,000 (exc. GST).

 

Duration

The grant is for use in the twelve months following its award in 2026. 

 

Eligibility 

To be eligible for the grant, applicants are required to:

  • be an Australian citizen or hold permanent Australian residency;
  • be a current financial GESA member with at least one year of prior membership and remain a financial member of GESA until after the final report has been accepted by GESA;
  • be currently working in Gastroenterology/Hepatology/Pancreatology or related fields in a clinical or basic science research role;
  • conduct the research in Australia;
  • have submitted satisfactory final reports for completed projects that were supported by GESA grants in previous funding rounds; and
  • not have received grant funding of more than $20,000 from GESA within the last two calendar years or hold current category 1 funding to support the research described.

 

Making an Application:

Your application should be submitted via the GESA Grants Portal.

  • Log in/Register a new account via the GESA Grants Portal. 
  • Once set up, scroll through the grants listing on the Home page and start an application for this grant. 
  • Complete the online application form and submit the following required documents:
  1. Your curriculum vitae (CV) including any publications, grants, awards etc (maximum 3 pages) which you can upload via My Account > My Profile;
  2. Your full project proposal (PDF file only) which must include:
    1.  a description of the research project or activity, the use to which the funds will be put, and how the work relates to currently funded studies, including detailed expenditure (maximum 2 pages);
    2.  a description of the significance and impact of the research project or activity (maximum 250 words);
    3. the name of the sponsoring institution and department or unit at which the fellowship will be conducted; and
    4.  a description of the support available from the institution (maximum 250 words).
  3. A letter of support, signed by your unit or department Head, from the institute where the fellowship will be undertaken that confirms your tenure for the duration of the grant.

 

Assessment of Applications

Applications will be assessed by the GESA Research and Grants Committee (RGC). The decision of the Committee shall be final.

The applications will be judged according to the following three criteria:

  1. The project’s potential impact in addressing the problem of colorectal or pancreatic cancer in the Australian community (40%);
  2. The originality and feasibility (including detailed expenditure) of the project (30%);
  3. The researchers’ track record relative to opportunity (30%).

Circumstances change frequently and may require adjustments to requirements, dates, and durations.                                                                                                                                         

 

Reporting & Communication

Grant recipients must provide GESA with:

  • a synopsis of the project to be provided to the sponsor and GESA members
  • on completion, a written report (500 words maximum) including publications and presentations.
    • this is likely to be published on the GESA website and for other uses.
  • a clear explanation on how the funds were used.
  • if requested, prepare and deliver a presentation of the work at its completion at Australian Gastroenterology Week (AGW). 
  • Letter of thanks to sponsor.

The sponsor should be acknowledged in all communications/presentations regarding the grant.

 

Payment Terms

Full payment of the grant funds will be made by GESA after:

  1. Receipt of the Letter of Acceptance of the terms and conditions;
  2. A Letter of Thanks to the sponsor; and 
  3. An invoice from the sponsoring entity.
